The theory test (ETG)

The French driving theory test, explained from start to finish.

How many questions, how many mistakes are allowed, how to register, what it costs and when the result arrives. Everything you need to know before booking your slot.

The format of the test

The ETG is the theory part of the French driving licence. It is taken on a tablet in an approved test centre.

40questions
35correct answers to pass
5mistakes allowed at most

The questions are asked in French. This is what surprises non-French-speaking candidates most: understanding the rule is not enough, you also have to understand the wording.

The steps, in order

From registration to result.

  1. Get your NEPH number. This is your driving-licence candidate number. Without it you cannot register for the test.
  2. Register for the test. Through your driving school, or on your own as an independent candidate via the ANTS platform.
  3. Pay the exam fee: €30. This is the official registration fee for the theory test. If you fail, it has to be paid again to retake the test.
  4. Turn up on the day. Bring your summons (convocation) and a valid ID. The required documents are listed on your summons.
  5. Check your result. It is available online from the day after the test.

Once you have passed the theory test

Your pass remains valid for 5 years. During that period you can take the practical test without retaking the theory test.

You are exempt from the theory test if…

You already have a pass less than 5 years old, or you hold a French licence obtained less than 5 years ago, or an equivalent European licence that meets the conditions.

If you fail

You can retake the test. The €30 registration fee is due again for each attempt.
